Scottsdale welcomed the OHM Fitness (ohmfitness.com) immersive fitness experience with open arms last summer. Now, the highly sought-after classes that use electro-muscle stimulation (EMS) technology through a wireless wearable EMPower bodysuit can also be taken at the new Gilbert location. Here, we ask Douglas Payne, founder and CEO, about the advantages of this unique workout, plus what’s up next for OHM Fitness.
What inspired you to open the OHM Fitness flagship in Scottsdale?
It was a natural choice since Scottsdale has been the birthplace of some of the world’s most thriving franchise brands, and I have been residing in Scottsdale for the past two decades, which makes me familiar with the local community and its needs. We’ve examined a variety of ideas over time, but none of them had the potential to become a market leader like EMS. After solving the challenges of utilizing EMS training in a group environment, we were confident that we had discovered something truly remarkable.

What is your favorite thing about what OHM Fitness offers?
Our goal at OHM is to help our clients lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. My favorite thing about OHM is that it provides outstanding results in a considerably shorter time. Fitness should enhance our lives, and we strive to make our workouts as time-efficient and convenient as possible.
Tell us about the benefits of EMS technology.
This technology can send impulses to muscle fibers up to 100 times faster, resulting in a low-impact workout that only takes 25 minutes but results in spending 2.5 hours in the gym.
Lights change during the workout with green lighting and calm music for the warm-up period. The music amps up, and lights turn red for the peak of the workout—the intensity of both the exercises and the suit will hit its peak here. Then, the cool-down period soothes with blue lighting.
What should a new member expect on the first visit?
Styku 3D body scans are offered to help inspire goal sets by providing a comprehensive analysis of body measurements, including body fat percentage, muscle mass, and bone density. The built-in coaching tools can help create realistic and achievable goals.
Along with Gilbert, what other locations are rolling out in 2023?
This year, the following are confirmed to open: San Diego; Boca Raton, Fla.; Wayne, N.J.; and Denver.

What is up next for OHM?
This summer, we’re rolling out OHM@Home, a unique and even more effective solution for busy people looking to fit fitness into their schedules. We’ll offer the same 25-minute, low-intensity workouts in our brick-and-mortar locations in the convenience of one’s home.
What do you hope your members will get from working out with OHM?
We hope our clients will gain a lot more than just physical fitness. We aim to create a community of people who are passionate about their health and wellbeing, and who support and encourage one another along their fitness journeys.
