“An evolution of a truly new sense of a unique style is launching here in town,” says Scottsdale’s beloved interior designer Julia Buckingham, founder of Julia Buckingham Interiors (juliabuckinghaminteriors.com). Known for blending modern and antique, and combining bold colors, patterns and eclectic pops of playfulness into her trademarked aesthetic, Modernique—which is also the name of her tome and showroom—here, she shares some insight on design elements that are hot in the Valley right now.

From where do you draw inspiration?
I love this question! There is no place that I don’t draw inspiration!
Favorite design elements that are having a moment right now?
Hot pink everywhere. Seriously, I am hitting every color button I can these days. And, particularly sharing the scene with unusual or unexpected color partners.
How has design changed over the past year?
I believe that with the introduction of my previous home furnishings store, Modernique, in 2017, Scottsdale has begun to embrace a style that is not only ‘Santa Barbara’ or ‘farmhouse.’ The metropolitan area of Phoenix is sophisticated and architecturally rich—no reason for it to not be a part of modern interior design.
What do you love about what you do?
My greatest pleasure is when all of the time and brainpower spent on a design project is revealed to the client family. It takes a good 48 hours for each vignette and nuanced detail to be absorbed. I don’t usually take any calls from the client until they have had the entire experience of living with everything for those 48 hours.
