Cosan Studio And Kristin Hazen Design Team Up On This Horshoe Canyon Home

A thoughtful blend of stone, stucco and reclaimed wood brings French flair to a new build in Horseshoe Canyon.

THE PROJECT

Scott Carson, principal of Cosan Studio, and Kristin Hazen, principal of Kristin Hazen Design, joined forces to create a timelessly beautiful new build in Silverleaf’s exclusive Horseshoe Canyon neighborhood. “The client requested a home that created privacy while also allowing for views of the McDowell Mountains,” says Carson. “A place the two of them could enjoy and one that would also work well when their grown family comes to visit.”

THE PLAN

The clients envisioned “a home that is timeless, comfortable and lives well,” says Carson. “[We set out to] create an inward-looking courtyard home that offers privacy from the neighbors, yet still allows for views over the architecture to the mountains beyond.” Style-wise, the clients desired a cleaned-up Old European villa look, encouraging the team to layer timeless materials. “They envisioned a modern-day version of a home in Europe, specifically, Provence,” Hazen shares. “They did not want anything too trendy, but also wanted to stay away from anything too ‘old’ feeling. Natural stone mixed with stucco on the exterior, old reclaimed beams and antique limestone fireplace surrounds from France are a few things that allowed us to blend the old and new and create a setting that embodied everything they were looking for.”

THE DETAILS

All-white kitchens may have been trending when the home was built, but the clients were interested in something with more character. “We went against the grain and did a white island with a stained finish for the main kitchen cabinets,” says Hazen.

Located right off the kitchen, the dining room was designed with a relaxed look and feel. “They wanted to have a designated eating space but wanted it to feel part of the gathering spaces versus a typical formal dining space that seems to get forgotten and go unused,” Hazen adds. She brought texture into the large living room via reclaimed beams and installed a tall antique fireplace surround. “That helped elongate the wall to balance the scale of the space,” she says. “The room also has symmetrical French doors on both sides that each open up to charming patio spaces which create an indoor-outdoor living experience from one side to the other!”

Other standouts include his-and-hers offices. “Hers is right off the kitchen with a pair of pocket doors designed to also look like antiques,” says Hazen, who calls out the black-and-white antique marble floor and view of the patio. “His office is also unique as it shares a glass wall with the ‘Man Cave’ which we created as a special space for some collector cars and a lounge area for him.”

THE OUTCOME

Now that the home is finished, the clients are over the moon with the results. “It’s cozy and welcoming as well as stylish and special,” Hazen shares. “It’s not overdone, yet so elegantly styled. It truly became a perfect balance.”
