Mesa resident Shaun T shares more than just his superpowers in a new self-help memoir, T Is for Transformation.

ANYONE WOULD THINK world-renowned health and fitness expert Shaun T was on top of the world seven years ago when publishers asked him to write a book about self-improvement. A few weeks into the project, he says, “I realized there were things I hadn’t dealt with,” so he pumped the brakes and started going to therapy, collecting hundreds of “truthbombs” along the way. Those insights would eventually form the backbone of T Is for Transformation: Unleash the 7 Superpowers to Help You Dig Deeper, Feel Stronger & Live Your Best Life (Rodale, $26). The hardcover book, arriving just in time for the holidays, is packed with revelations, inspiration and—most of all—motivation. By Chapter 3, Shaun T asks introspective questions like, “What do you have buried in your closet?” then bravely answers the query himself with recollections of an abusive and alcoholic stepfather who violated him for years, a 50-pound weight gain in college, a gig as a dancing Chuck E. Cheese and memories of coming to terms with his sexual identity. All the confessions, Shaun T explains, are for “reaching that person who has trouble believing he or she actually matters.” While traveling for his book tour, which stops in Phoenix Jan. 28, Shaun T will also move his mission forward with the development of The Camp Transformation Center in Mesa launching later this year. Then, he reports, fate has another seismic transformation underway for him and his husband, pro soccer player Scott Blokker: “Thanks to love, hope and a little bit of science, we are expecting twins, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to bring them home to Arizona.” Fatherhood might just forge the best version of Shaun T yet.
