Known for building some of the valley’s most beautiful luxury homes, Vista General is a go-to when it comes to creating top-quality ground-up properties that stand the test of time. When it came time for the company’s founder, Luke Wilson, to build his own family home for him, his wife Mischa, and kids Delaney and Mason, he turned to the trusted partners he’s worked with for nearly two decades, including architect Matt Thomas and interior designer Jennifer Ferrandi of NoMad Design. “We all three have worked together for years so were very excited to be collaborating on Luke’s dream home,” says Ferrandi, who, along with design assistant Jamie Salazar, handled decorating the new build’s interiors.

For the home, located within the Arizona Country Club in Arcadia, Ferrandi’s goal was to create a chic and comfortable family home that echoed the Wilsons’ personalities. “To know the Wilsons is to love them,” she says. “They are such an incredible family. Mischa and Luke are very warm and casual people so I really wanted the interiors to reflect this. I wanted the home to be timeless and sophisticated while staying cozy and approachable.”
Because the clients were both born and raised in Southern California, Ferrandi planned to integrate a beachy aesthetic into the design plan. “I tried to provide them with an Arizona version of the laid-back coastal feel, which they love,” she says. In fact, it was an iconic Southern California piece that inspired much of the design. “The surfboard they wanted to hang over the piano set the tone,” she explains.

To embrace this laid-back, warm and elegant aesthetic, Ferrandi and Salazar laid a foundation with white oak floors, coated the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White paint and covered windows in simple shades from The Shade Store. Then, they added pieces made from linen, wood and rattan—paired with faded vintage rugs, painted white brick and nubby textiles—for a layered, inviting look and feel.
This soft, organic palette is present throughout the home but really stands out in the primary bedroom. “I think this might be the favorite primary bedroom I have done to date,” says Ferrandi. “Mischa requested a simple linen bed I had used at a prior project, so that set the tone. We used a lot of natural linen with just a touch of terra cotta [and] added texture with rattan sconces and a nubby wool area rug,” she adds. “The entire room feels dreamy and the view from the cozy window seat can’t be beat.”

Another standout space is the kitchen. “This kitchen was so much fun to design,” shares Ferrandi. “There are windows on two sides and Matt [Thomas’] addition of a skylight makes it flooded with natural light. Early in the design process I was concerned that the skylight would make it very difficult to hang any type of light fixture over the island. As soon as framing went up I saw the view of the golf course out the window and any concern dissipated as that really needed to be the focal point.”
Unlike some other families who may dine at the kitchen counter or in front of the television, the Wilsons wanted to use their dining room daily, so they requested a very open kitchen, dining room and family room. “We used a dark grasscloth wallcovering in the small bar area at the end of the space and a planked ceiling detail to add definition,” Ferrandi explains of the dining room’s design.

Equally impressive as the interiors are the exterior spaces. “A major goal of this home was to enjoy the incredible Arizona weather and view of the golf course,” says Ferrandi. “Pocket doors in the breezeway between the kitchen and pool house really blur the lines between indoor and outdoor. And while we have a small outdoor dining area off the kitchen, when hosting large family dinners, the Wilsons open these doors and set an extra-long dining table in the breezeway for an incredible indoor-outdoor experience.”
The finished project is exactly what the Wilson family dreamed of. “Luke and Mischa sent the most beautiful text after walking through for the first time,” says Ferrandi. “I was thrilled to be included in this journey with my good friends.”
