Thunderbird Art Works

Thunderbird Arts Center in North Phoenix is proud to present Thunderbird Art Works, a new initiative that pairs local artists with local businesses. The goal is to bring art out of the studios in which it is created and into public spaces.

The businesses that will be displaying artworks include Elevate Coffee Co. (2530 W Happy Valley Rd. Suite 1273), Natalino Italian Restaurant (610 E Bell Rd.), and Thunderbird Arts Center (1106 E Grovers Ave). The opening receptions are free and open to the public, and will take place on Friday, July 12, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at each location. Businesses will be offering special promotions and discounts at their respective receptions.

Earlier this spring, students and instructors from Thunderbird Arts Center submitted their artwork to a juried competition. David Elliot, Nancy Price, Nik Ridley, and Ed DuBrow were the selected winners. The following are the pairings of businesses and artists: David Elliot with Elevate Coffee Co., Nancy Price with Natalino Italian Restaurant, and Nik Ridely and Ed DuBrow with Thunderbird Arts Center.

The artworks will be available for purchase beginning on July 15, 2019 on the Thunderbird Arts Center website, Artworks will be on display at each location until the closing reception on Friday, September 13, 2019 from 6-8PM.

Tomato's "Night in Sicily"

WHAT: Tomaso’s will host a “Night in Sicily” wine pairing dinner to honor Chef Tomaso Maggiore’s accomplishments and the 43rd anniversary of the opening of Tomaso’s Italian Restaurant on the Camelback Corridor. The night will feature a special prix-fixe, multi-course menu featuring Sicilian cuisine such as Sicilian Pasta Palina and Braciole with slow braised sicilian sugo, and Sicilian wines including the Maggiore family-owned wine line, Luxus.

MISS SAIGON has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and Alain Boublil, adapted from original French lyrics by Alain Boublil, with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler. The new production is directed by Laurence Connor with musical staging by Bob Avian and additional choreography by Geoffrey Garratt. Since its London premiere in 1989, Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s epic musical MISS SAIGON has become one of the most successful musicals in history. Ballet Arizona Presents New and Groundbreaking Works Sept. 26-29

Satisfy your craving for the new and unexpected as Ballet Arizona presents Director’s Choice from Sept. 26-29 at Orpheum Theatre. Witness a selection of contemporary works that push the boundaries of ballet.

Director’s Choice represents the evolution of ballet in that it celebrates the past, present and future of ballet. The production will feature three distinctly different ballets: a work by the legendary choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton, a Latin-inspired world premiere by Ballet Arizona Dancer Nayon Iovino, and a sentimental reflection of Ib Andersen’s 20 years with Ballet Arizona. Audiences are sure to be inspired by this diverse repertoire.

“I have always wanted to produce an Ashton ballet at Ballet Arizona, and this is the first time I have had the opportunity,” said Artistic Director Ib Andersen. “It is exciting for us to include this in our repertory this year. It will be the Arizona premiere by such a world-renowned choreographer. As I reflect on the past 20 years I am inspired, humbled, and grateful to have been a part of our Phoenix community. Audiences have allowed me to fulfill my passion to teach and create art to share with Arizonans and that is a gift I do not take for granted. As a result I want to create a new ballet that highlights and celebrates some of the audience favorites throughout my tenure here – sort of a ‘greatest hits’ if you will – I think it will be a fun way to honor our patrons.”

The trio of ballets will also include an on-stage “party.” The host of the party will be longtime Ballet Arizona dancer Nayon Iovino, AZCentral’s “Best Up-and-Coming Choreographer” and a 2019 New York Choreographic Institute Participant.

“The experience I had at the New York Choreographic Institute gave me a different point of view of the choreographic process,” said Iovino. “I was excited when I found out I would be choreographing something new for Ib's 20th anniversary season. As I began to brainstorm ideas and look for music for this new ballet, I kept coming back to the idea that I just wanted to throw Ib a big party on stage. My hope is that audience members will feel as if they are part of the celebration!”

The 2019 lineup for Director’s Choice includes:

  • Les Patineurs [The Skaters] – Performed for the first time in Arizona, Sir Frederick Ashton’s charming collection of vignettes evoke the movement of ice skating. It is a one-act series of divertissements set in a lantern-lit Victorian ice rink.
  • New Work from Ib Andersen – Andersen will mark 20 years with Ballet Arizona with a new ballet crafted from some of his greatest hits and new works as he continues to keep ballet fans on their toes.
  • New Work from Nayon Iovino – Iovino will present a Latin-infused on-stage “party” in honor of Andersen’s 20th year. Iovino’s most recent work was featured in New York City after being one of three choreographers selected to participate in the New York Choreographic Institute in February 2019.

11th Annual Sedona Winefest

WHAT: The Sedona Winefest will be returning for its 11thannual celebration at the Sedona Posse Grounds Park. Valley of the Sun Suitcase Gala

Guests of the inaugural Valley of the Sun Suitcase Gala benefiting the Marine Raider Foundation will want to opt for a carry-on instead of a clutch the evening of October 5 at Chateau Luxe. The night of fundraising, dinner and inspirational guest speakers will culminate with a lucky couple being whisked away in a private jet by Cutter Aviation for a two-night getaway in Santa Barbara.

The event will celebrate and raise awareness about special operations raiders with the help of guest speaker and combat veteran Kirstie Ennis, recipient of the 2019 Pat Tillman Award at the ESPY Awards earlier this month. Ennis is a former Marine sergeant who lost her leg after a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. After more than 40 surgeries, the 28-year-old veteran is currently on a quest to tackle the Seven Summits on one leg by 2021. Ennis alongside emcee and decorated veteran Derek Herrera will help raise funds for the MARSOC Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit that supports World War II Marine Raiders, active-duty and former Marine Raiders and raider families.

The Marine Raider Foundation supports current and former Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) raiders and families as well as the families of raiders who lost their lives in service. Since 2012, the Marine Raider Foundation has provided more than $4 million to support raiders during transition into civilian life, tragedy assistance and survivor support, family resiliency, legacy and preservation.

18th Annual Night for Sight

Join Valley CEO’s, local celebrities and attendees for the 18th Annual Night for Sight event on Saturday, October 5th, 2019 at Dominick’s Steakhouse in the Scottsdale Quarter. The annual event raises valuable funds to promote the awareness and opportunities for blind or visually impaired children through adults.

This year’s event will be especially touching for Foundation for Bind Children (FBC) board member and Chair Sarah Saglam and her son Jordan Rodriquez. Just 16 years at the time, Rodriquez went blind as a junior in high school.

Now a civil engineer with his Master's in Sustainable Engineering, Rodriquez credits the Foundation for Blind Children for providing tools and assistance that he needed to help him get through school.

Night for Sight attendees will feast on the Valley’s best steaks and seafood, cocktails and wine provided by Dominick’s Steakhouse, while enjoying a silent auction, dancing and live entertainment. Guests can also partake in fun activities such as the Sink or Swim yellow ducks during the cocktail hour, which benefit FBC programs. Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy the dueling pianos performance and this year as a special treat, Solo Violinist and Fiddle player, Cathie King will join the pianists for a special performance.

Scottsdale's First Oktoberfest

WHAT: The first and only Oktoberfest has been announced! The event will kick off at noon and run until 5 p.m. The 21+ event will have live entertainment from Germany’s multi-talented performer straight from entertaining at Oktoberfest in Germany, Melina. DJ Soul Man from the original Valley-based Phunk Junkeez will DJ for the day.

A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the Scottsdale Firefighters Charities. This nonprofit is comprised of professional firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics from Scottsdale that dedicate their work towards bettering the community in which they serve through charitable works.

Local food trucks and vendors serving classic German food will be on-site serving up delicious dishes including bratwurst, sauerkraut and spatetzle. The event will feature Samuel Adams Oktoberfest beer plus giant interactive games, a cornhole tournament and stein hoisting contests will take place throughout the day. Winner of the stein hoisting contest will win a trip to Boston for a two night stay and tour of the Sam Adams brewery!

Scottsdale Gallery Association Announces Gold Palette ArtWalk Series for 2019-2020 Season

WHAT: The SGA’s Gold Palette ArtWalks are offered eight times a year in addition to the SGA’s weekly Thursday evening ArtWalks and feature extended gallery hours, special activities and experiences for attendees such as complimentary wine tasting and/or small bites, and live music and entertainment that align with each event’s theme.

Hunkapi Programs, an equine therapy farm located in the heart of Scottsdale, is excited to announce the 4th annual signatureOpen Your Heart Gala on Friday, October 11, celebrating the nonprofit’s 20th anniversary. Join the 4th annual Noche en Blanco, October 26th on the East Lawn of Hance Park.

Inspired by a similar "dinner in white" that began in Paris 30 years ago, Noche en Blanco has a character unique to Phoenix. Guests will arrive dressed all in white, share in a sunset toast, and partake in gourmet picnics paired with fine wine. The Scottsdale International Film Festival Returns for its 19th Year

The Scottsdale International Film Festival, (SIFF) a yearly 10-day event that connects audiences with award-winning cinema from around the globe, is returning for its 19th annual festival on Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 10, 2019.

Enhanced and expanded from previous years, SIFF will kick off opening night at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, November 1, moving to Harkins Shea 14 from November 2 through November 3, and adds a third location at the Harkins Camelview at Fashion Square from November 4 through November 7. SIFF will return to Harkins Shea 14 on November 8, for the remainder of its film screenings.

SIFF’s annual lineup will be announced on Tuesday, October 1, and will showcase more than 55 films from dozens of countries, originating from both first-time and seasoned filmmakers.

As a part of the 2019 programming team, SIFF is excited to announce the addition of film consultant, Gary Meyer.

“Mr. Meyer is a veteran of the film industry. He has consulted for Sundance Cinemas, revived the 1926 Balboa Theatre in San Francisco and is former Co-Director for the Telluride Film Festival from 2006-2015. We are overjoyed to have him join our team and know that Gary’s contribution will elevate SIFF to the next level,” stated SIFF Executive Director, Amy Ettinger.

30th Anniversary of the NiteFlite Charity Event

The annual NiteFlite Gala hosted by the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club will be a night full of glitz and glamour at the W Scottsdale Hotel. Last year’s NiteFlite Gala raised over $616,000 for Arizona based children’s charities. This year, NiteFlite will celebrate its 30th anniversary and is looking to surpass its prior year’s fundraising total and participation.

The event raises money for more than a dozen local children’s charities, including the #LoveUp Foundation, Playworks Arizona, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the formal Gala on Saturday, November 16th, where they will be treated to food and drinks from local restaurants, live music and entertainment, and night-long raffle prizes. The wildly popular NiteFlite Golf Tournament returns Friday, November 15, offering participants a day of golf, food, drink and the opportunity to win prizes, including the 19th hole Million Dollar Shootout.
